Online Safety Tips for Teenagers:
Using The Web Safely:
Whether you have a teen or a child that soon will be, it is important you talk with them about the dangers associated with using the Web.
The Internet is a powerful tool. You can use the Internet to review real estate investing newsletters and find the house of your dream. I know because I recently used the Internet to review dozens of free real estate newsletters while helping my brother in his quest for a new home.
You can also use the Web to find information about business investments, as a tool for working from home, as a means of communicating with friends and family oversees and merely as a form of entertainment.
As an adult you should know there are many risks associated with using the Web. While you may consider yourself Internet savvy, if you have children you should take a moment to consider whether they are aware of the dangers associated with using the Web.
Today there are dozens of people who use the Web as a tool for robbing, cheating and taking advantage of users, especially when it comes to young teens and children surfing the Web. Fortunately you can help protect your teen and children by encouraging them to follow a few key safety steps.
Safety steps for Children and Teens Using The Web:
Here are some important safety steps for children and teens using the Internet.
-
Always keep your personal information including your address, phone number and full name private. This is especially important when using public chat rooms or message boards. Revealing any of this information may put you in jeopardy.
-
Avoid meeting anyone you encounter online in person. You simply never know if someone really is who they say they are when on the Web.
-
Recognize that people can easily conceal their identity on the Web. You should always be skeptical when conversing with people for the first time.
-
Never respond to unsolicited text messages, IM's or e-mails from people you do not know.
-
Report any misconduct including rude or inappropriate messages to a parent or friend.
As a parent you should also limit the time your children spend on the Internet to help encourage them to communicate and engage in other beneficial and entertaining activities.
This may help improve their outlook and encourage your children to communicate more openly and freely with you as they see you as a friend as well as an authority figure, confidant and parent.
